Deputy Minister Jeffery to deliver Keynote Address at the Virtual Consultative Workshop on South Africa’s Country Report under the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD)

Even after more than 2 decades of democracy, racism and racial discrimination still affect aspects of the lives of many South Africans.

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) was signed by South Africa in 1994 and ratified in 1998. In terms of the Convention, South Africa has to submit periodic reports to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on progress made in respect of combating racism and racial discrimination in the country.

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr. John Jeffery, MP, will deliver a keynote address at the virtual consultative workshop on the draft country report.

The report describes the measures put in place by South Africa to address racism and racial discrimination while also presenting the progress that South Africa has made in promoting the rights to equality and human dignity.

The workshop aims to cement participatory democracy based on the provisions of the Constitution which recognize that South Africa is founded upon the values of human dignity, the achievement of equality, the advancement of human rights and freedoms and non-racialism and non-sexism.

Members of civil society bodies, members of the media and interested members of the public are invited to join the virtual workshop:
