The Department of Labour has instructed uShaka Marine World in Durban to
urgently conduct a refresher Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) course for
all employees on the safe handling of hazardous chemical substances.
The instruction came after seven workers were briefly hospitalised at the
Addington Hospital yesterday, following a chemical mix-up that resulted in the
release of toxic chemical gases.
Preliminary investigations by the Department's inspectors had uncovered that
one worker who was refilling the Sodium Hydrochlorite Acid drum had
accidentally used it instead of Sodium Hypochloric Acid. The mix-up of these
acids resulted in the release of dangerous gases.
Investigations also revealed that a chemical supplier, Protea Chemicals-KZN
normally supplies the Sodium Hydrochlorite Acid in a blue 25 litre container,
while the Hydrochloric Acid is supplied in a black container.
A recommendation to further conduct a full scale investigation into the
matter was scheduled for 18 April, in which all relevant stakeholders will be
represented.
