Minister of Minerals and Energy to host the third African
Mining Partnership

The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Mrs Lindiwe Hendricks, will host the
third African Mining Partnership (AMP) from 4 to 6 February at the
International Convention Centre in Cape Town.

The AMP was launched in 2004 to further the New Partnership for Africa’s
Development (NEPAD) mining and minerals initiatives in the quest for economic
development in the continent. Countries were assigned projects to spearhead and
ensure that they contribute significantly towards growing Africa’s economy
using its mineral wealth. To date, South Africa and Mali have entered into a
partnership to exchange training programmes in the area of Beneficiation.
Ethiopia, Mali and Nigeria will report on developments made around artisinal
and Small-Scale Mining.

The officials’ meeting on 4 and 5 February will report on progress made in
the areas of beneficiation, facilitation of artisinal and small-scale mining
development, environment/sustainable development, human resource development
and promoting foreign investment and indigenous/local partnership in mining
ventures. This will be followed by Ministerial meeting which will review
progress and challenges experienced by countries in executing assigned projects
on 6 February 2006.

Twenty three Ministers are expected at this meeting, wherein a new Executive
Committee will be elected. The current Executive Committee comprises of eight
member states, with Ghana chairing and South Africa as the Secretariat.
