KwaZulu-Natal Transport on pedestrian safety

KwaZulu-Natal Transport on eight killed pedestrians

7 April 2007

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport road traffic inspectorate will
intensify enforcement on pedestrians.

Since the beginning of the Easter weekend already eight pedestrian have been
killed. Most of the accidents took place on national roads. About 40% of people
that are killed in our roads are pedestrians and most tested positive for
alcohol. MEC Cele said, "The number of pedestrians who been have been killed so
far is cause for concern. We are left with no option but to arrest those who
walk on our freeways. Drinking and walking claims lives the same as drinking
and driving does," MEC Cele continues.

Out of the eight pedestrians killed three were knocked down in the same spot
on the N2 next to Sibaya Casino. Pedestrians are urged to use designated areas
for crossing and to wear visible cloth when walking at night.
