Operation Isondlo outreach event

16 November 2007

The department's endeavour to better maintenance services to the communities
is paying off as Operation Isondlo has once again brought some success stories,
emanating from the Cape Town Magistrate's Office. At the outreach event the
department will be issuing cheques for unclaimed maintenance to beneficiaries,
whom the office has traced. Further to this the office will be doing outreach;
educating and assisting members of public on the different services the
department has to offer.

Date: 17 November 2007
Time: 07h00
Venue: Maitland Taxi Rank, Maitland

The Minister for Justice and Constitutional Development committed herself to
improve the maintenance system and to find beneficiaries of unclaimed
maintenance monies as part of the department's commitment and contribution to
alleviate poverty, under the umbrella of Operation Isondlo.

Operation Isondlo which focuses on maintenance issues aims to improve the
maintenance system through a series of interventions such as, amongst others,
the paying out of unclaimed maintenance monies to beneficiaries, clamping down
on maintenance defaulters, appointment of maintenance investigators and
educating the public on their rights in terms of maintenance.

Violence against women and children takes many forms, the Domestic Violence
Act No 116 of 1998, recognises economic abuse as one form. The improving and
strengthening of the maintenance system is another way of eradicating violence
against women and children.
