North West Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) projects
receive recognition

19 February 2007

The implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme by the North West
Department of Public Works received recognition at the 2006/07 Impumelelo
Innovation Awards held last Saturday in Cape Town.

The Integrated Modimola EPWP Project and the Semelela Brickmaking and Paving
Project dominated the Star Award Category and were awarded certificates in
recognition of their exceptional contribution to poverty reduction and
community development. Both projects were among thirty projects nominated
nationwide by the Impumelelo Innovation Trust.

"It was not an easy work for the judges to nominate the projects because all
projects are good but at the end the best projects were chosen," said Chairman
of Impumelelo Innovations Award Trust Dr Franklin Sonn.

Impumelelo Innovations Awards Trust is a non-governmental organisation that
rewards innovations in government and public-private partnerships that reduce
poverty and address key developmental issues of national concern.

In her keynote address, the Executive Mayor for Cape Town, Ms Helen Zille
congratulated the North West Department of Public Works for winning and further
said that private sector involvement in both projects showed that the
government has good relations with non-government organisations and the public
private sectors.

In congratulating the Project Management Teams for the achievements, an
overjoyed MEC Yawa said, "The commitment of all involved in the projects has
defied the pessimism with which the projects were viewed in their initial pilot
stages. We are humbled and challenged by this recognition to maintain the
standard we have set ourselves to make a difference in service delivery."

He further said, "We still believe that the success of the Modimola EPWP
Project is underrated and that other provinces could benefit from the unique
and integrated strategy we have adopted to maximise the impact and
sustainability of our intervention in poverty stricken areas." Meanwhile, MEC
Yawa is to award certificates to EPWP graduates from the Central Region at a
certification function to be held on Tuesday, 20 February 2007 at the Barolong
Boo-Ratshidi Community Hall in Mafikeng. The event is scheduled to commence at
12h00.
