Government on incidents of political violence

Government statement on incidents of political violence

24 April 2006

Government has noted with disappointment the incident at Crossroads in Cape
Town where a community meeting attended by Mayor Helen Zille was disrupted and
violence used against the Mayor.

Government condemns this kind of behaviour without qualification. Our
Constitution guarantees free political activity for all parties and
individuals. Irrespective of differences that citizens may have on any issue
and whatever the circumstances surrounding the organisation of any lawful
gathering, all of us are required to express our views in a civil manner.

It is also critical that offices of leadership provided for in our
Constitution and individuals occupying these offices, are accorded the respect
that they deserve. In the same vein, government wishes to condemn in the
strongest terms attacks directed against municipal councillors in Khutsong, in
the North West Province.

In both instances, we expect security agencies to follow these matters up
and ensure that the law takes its course.
