25 March 2009
The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership
with Metsweding District Municipality will host the public viewing of an
international friendly game between Bafana Bafana and Norway. The event will
take place at Die Draai, Bronkhorstspruit on the 28 March 2009 at 15h30 and
will be preceded by a five aside tournament and performances by local
artists.
Gauteng will use the match to help propel the development of football and
build the love of soccer as well as raising spectator support for football in
South Africa and Gauteng in particular.
During the last world cup in Germany, about 18 million people had watched games
on screens six times more than those who were in the stadiums. They also
considered as an economic potential for local communities who wish to do
business by selling food and drink during the matches.
âWe are engaging various stakeholders to ensure that the excitement of the
World Cup is experienced not only by host cities, and we will collaborate with
sponsors to set up at least one public viewing area in each district
municipality. The public viewing provide easier access to fans who are unable
to obtain or afford tickets to the matches and will provide an excellent
opportunity to showcase the province's rich cultural diversity,â says Gauteng
MEC for Sports Arts Culture and Recreation Barbara Creecy.
Public viewings will ensure more than a million people come to South Africa,
despite the limited tickets available for matches at the FIFA 2010 World
Cup.
Organisers are pulling all stops to ensure the public viewing becomes a
spectacular event and are calling on Bronkhorstspruit residents to join in this
spectacle. Entrance to the event is free and gates will open at 9h00.
