Gauteng Housing on Polokego shelter for abused for 16 Days of
Activism

The Gauteng MEC for Housing Nomvula Mokonyane gives Polokego
home for the abused a face-lift

5 December 2006

The Gauteng MEC for Housing Nomvula Mokonyane together with Seakay
Engineering Services today handed over the newly renovated Polokego shelter for
the abused in Krugersdorp, Mogale City.

The shelter is one of 16 shelters identified by the Department that are in
need of urgent attention. Polokego assists abused women and children and
victims of human trafficking.

This initiative forms part of the Department of Housing's contribution to
the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children Abuse campaign. Through this
initiative, the Department, in partnership with private sector, will renovate
shelters for abused women and children. The departmental rallying theme for
this year is "Homes of Hope in 16 days."

During this year's campaign, the department focuses on five shelters and
will continue to look for partnerships to renovate the remaining 11 shelters
until next year's campaign.

Once again, this initiative illustrates that while the department's core
business is to build sustainable communities, it also cares about the plight of
abused women and children.

"We cannot turn a blind eye on the plight of women and children who often
suffer abuse. They need to be housed in a conducive environment where they are
safe. I hope this gesture will go a long a way in restoring the dignity of the
victims and heal their pain," said Mokonyane.
