with mobile stations
21 November 2006
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has removed satellite stations
located at various highway interchanges around the province and replaced them
with mobile stations. The Department under its 'Drive for Life' campaign had
established 7 satellite stations at the following locations; Heidelburg/N3;
R59/ Johan Le Roux; N14/ Lanseria; Gilloly's interchange; Buccleuch
interchange; Wallmansthall and the N1/N4 split.
The establishment of the static satellite stations at these geographic
points was as a result of these areas being declared hazardous locations in the
province. However, over time, the hazardous status of these geographic points
was exited due to a number of projects being successfully implemented to
address the problems of the areas. In essence then, the static stations were
rendered unnecessary at these locations whilst other areas were identified as
hazardous and requiring a similar approach to that of a satellite station.
Within this context, the Department took a decision to close the static
satellite stations and utilise mobile units to ensure rapid deployment and
greater visibility throughout the province. The department in its new approach
will utilise six (6) multi-purpose vehicles as mobile units throughout the
province, with a specific emphasis on pedestrian hazardous locations. Immediate
hazardous locations for the department's intervention include Moloto Road;
N14/Diepsloot; R59; the Golden Highway and Olievenhoutsbosch.
It is anticipated that through the utilisation of mobile units the
department will increase its visibility, ensure rapid response to hazardous
locations requiring urgent intervention.
