Environmental Affairs and Tourism to hold Annual South African Women and
Environment Conference, 6 – 8 Aug

Second Annual South African Women and Environment Conference
focuses on “empowering women for environmental action”.

28 July 2006

The second annual Women and Environment conference is set to take place in
White River, Mpumalanga from 6 to 8 August 2006.

The inaugural conference hosted by the Department of Environmental Affairs
and Tourism (DEAT) in Misty Hills Conference Centre from 6 to 8 March 2005 was
aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by South African women through
creating a platform for women and the girl child to inform policy and decision
makers of their circumstances.

In 2006 under the over-arching theme of “Empowering Women for Environmental
Action” the second conference as a follow up to the initial conference intends
to recognise the current international, regional and national challenges and
trends on key priority issues, including issues under the Beijing declaration
platform for action as they relate to Women and the Environment. The outcome of
the conference should be a clear South African Women action plan and framework
for environmental decision-making and management.
