Eastern Cape Agriculture to host agricultural youth development summit,
26 to 27 Feb

Media invitation

25 February 2009

The Department of Agriculture cordially invites you to an agricultural youth
development summit that is aimed at developing both learners and educators who
are involved in the agricultural studies in their schools.

The department, through the directorate of agriculture, education and
training has embarked on a massive project that aims to target strategic
partners to instil agricultural education and to ensure agriculture becomes a
career of choice among the youth.

To release this, the department has approached the Department of Education
(DoE) in the East London district to engage in a pilot project where schools
have agriculture as a subject and identify educators involved in the subject.
The pilot will also look at running career exhibitions in collaboration with
the DoE and the department believes this pilot will allow both departments to
draw lessons, thereby assisting in the large scale of rolling out the programme
to the whole province.

This initiative will help in identifying the challenges faced by the
agriculture educators and in gaining recognition of agriculture as a science
subject. Since the Eastern Cape is rich with land, it has been the department’s
goal to ensure people understood that their gold mines or wealth is through
tilling the land as well looking after livestock.

By targeting scholars, the department hopes to plant the seed of agriculture
in the young minds as well as changing the mindset of young people, who think
agriculture is a backward subject.

The department aims to reach a target of 400 scholars and teachers in this
forthcoming summit and members of the media are invited to attend this august
event.
