Commemoration of the Day of the African Child

The Office on the Rights of the Child in The Presidency, in collaboration
with the National Civil Society Children’s Rights, invites you to attend the
commemoration of the Day of the African Child to be celebrated for the first
time in South Africa on (Saturday) 24 June 2006.

The Minister in The Presidency, Dr Essop Pahad, together with the President
of the Pan African Parliament, Dr Getrude Mongellla, will be addressing the
audience.

About 10 African States along with hundreds of children are expected to
participate.

The Day of the African Child is a designated day for the African Union (AU)
whereby the Charter on the rights and welfare of children was adopted by the
African countries with the objective of ensuring that right and welfare of
children are being upheld by Member States.

The theme of the event is Child Protection in the Age of Hope.
