Officials of the Department of Correctional Services and the South African
Police Service (SAPS) have re-captured two offenders and launched a manhunt for
other five awaiting-trial detainees that escaped from Johannesburg Correctional
Centre before mid-day today, 13 June 2006.
The seven escapees used two firearms to take hostage an official and while
being in civilian clothes as awaiting trial detainees, mixed with visitors and
made their way at gunpoint through the gates of the correctional centre. The
Department has appointed a high-level management team to investigate how the
offenders managed to escape.
The Department is appealing to the public to immediately contact their
nearest police station or contact Superintendent Haasbroek of the SAPS at 082
463 4673 with any information that can help the re-arrest of the awaiting trial
detainees. Further details including their photographs will be released at a
later stage.
