South Africa under no threat of bird flu
9 February 2006
South Africa imports no poultry from Nigeria or any other member of ECOWAS.
This country was declared a Notifiable Avian Influenza free zone by the
European Union on 14 November 2005. Therefore, the Department would like to
echo the same sentiment as that expressed by the Onderstepoort Veterinary
Institute experts that the outbreak poses no real threat to this country.
The only countries from which South Africa imports poultry are neighbouring
Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia. All these countries are free from
Notifiable Avian Influenza.
