Road Traffic Management Corporation on bail for Tlokwe Traffic officers

The four North West traffic officers, who were arrested on allegations of bribery and corruption last week, have been granted bail.

The four officers, employed by the Tlokwe municipality, appeared in the Potchefstroom magistrate court today. They were given bail of R2000 each and are expected to appear in court again next month.

The officers  - Mohalenyane Elliot Mphuti, Ogorogile Peter Matlhoahela, Sibusiso Paul Rheretyana and Sakaria Godfrey Molete - were arrested at their offices in Potchefstroom by members of the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit which is attached to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on Friday.

Their arrests followed months of investigation by anti-corruption members. More arrests are expected in efforts to clean the image of the traffic fraternity.

This brings to more than 30 the number of traffic officers arrested since last year on allegations of bribery, fraud and corruption.

Fraud and corruption has been identified as one of the factors contributing to crashes, fatalities and injuries.

Members of the public are urged to report corruption on 0861 400 800. All calls will be treated confidentially.
