The Minister of Social Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya will tomorrow,
Thursday, 23 November 2006, sign a co-operation agreement with his counterpart
from Mauritius at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The signing ceremony will take place on the sidelines of the conference
focusing on the development of a regional social policy for the Southern
African Development Community (SADC). The conference, which is to be attended
by Ministers responsible for social development in the SADC region, will be
officially opened by Dr Skweyiya tomorrow. It is hosted by the Department of
Social Development in partnership with the United Nations Department of
Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).
The senior officials' preparatory session began on Tuesday and the
Ministerial session will run from Thursday to Friday this week.
Tomorrow, Dr Skweyiya will at 10h30 sign a Memorandum of Understanding with
Ms Sheilabai Bappo, Minister of Social Security, National Solidarity and Senior
Citizens Welfare Reform Institutions of the Government of the Republic of
Mauritius.
The MoU will focus on enhancing relations between the two countries in the
areas of:
a. social assistance to vulnerable communities
b. HIV and AIDS
c. drug and substance abuse and rehabilitation
d. persons with disabilities
e. capacity building for civil society organisations
f. implementation of the Southern African Development Community and African
Union decisions, including the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD)
programme.
