Agency and United Nations Children's' Fund (UNICEF) to sign agreement to fight
child poverty

The Minister of Social Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya, is to preside over the
signing of a partnership between the Department of Social Development, South
African Social Security Agency and the United Nations Children's Fund on
Friday, 20 April 2007.

The partnership, falling within the framework of UNICEF's new country
programme 2007-2010, is focused on developing a comprehensive package of
services for children and to reduce child poverty.
The signing ceremony of the partnership will also be witnessed by the MECs
responsible for social development in the nine provinces. It will take place at
the meeting of the MINMEC meeting of the Minister and MECs, who will spend the
day co-ordinating the implementation of social development sector
programmes.
Areas of work covered by the agreement are the following:
* strengthening databases and linking poor learners with social grants in
schools
* assessing policy and implementation impacts of the child support grant
* identification and consolidation of legislation on social assistance for
children
* linking birth registration to social grants
* multi-networked data base for Social Security
* capacity building of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)
* support to policy debates on universal and conditional cash transfers
