The Minister of Social Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya, has tragically lost
his niece, Ms Zanele Cona, who died in a brutal attack in New Brighton, Port
Elizabeth, on Saturday, 14 January 2006.

Ms Cona (29) was viciously attacked by a group of men on Saturday and her
body was found on Sunday. She will be laid to rest in Gugulethu, Cape Town on
Saturday, 21 January 2006.

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Dr Jean Benjamin, and the
Director-General, Mr Vusi Madonsela, have extended their condolences to the
Skweyiya family on behalf of the staff and stakeholders of the Department.

Said Mr Madonsela: “We join hands in extending our heartfelt condolences to
the Minister and family during this difficult time. We trust that the
perpetrators will be brought to book for this heinous crime against a
defenceless young woman. May the family find solace in the knowledge that they
have the support and prayers of multitudes who abhor crime in general, and
violence against women in particular”.
