Minister Skweyiya to launch anti-poverty campaign in
Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal

20 November 2007

The Minister of Social Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya, will on 22 November
visit the community of Umzimkhulu to kick-start and promote the intensive
provision of anti-poverty and civic services to the residents of the area and
surroundings.

The visit is part of Minister Skweyiya's anti poverty campaign, the
Integrated Community Registration Programme (ICROP), through which services are
taken to people in remote and poor areas. The campaign targets people who are
unable to travel to towns to apply for social grants and other services, due to
extreme poverty or lack of knowledge of the services that government
provides.

Sophisticated mobile trucks from the South African Social Security Agency
(SASSA) will enable residents to register for social grants, and they will be
informed of the outcome of their applications on the same day. SASSA will also
ensure the availability of doctors on site to assess applicants for the
disability grants. Police will be available for affidavits where there is a
need.

General health and welfare services will also be made available. The day's
programme also incorporates services from the Home Affairs, Justice and
Education departments.

The Minister will be accompanied by the MEC for Social Development in
KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Meshack Hadebe.
