Honourable Zanele Dlungwana is deeply touched by the plight of victims of fire
during this winter season
31 July 2007
In two separate incidents that occurred around 15 July 2007, the Letsemeng
Municipality in Xhariep has specifically brought to the attention of the MEC,
the unfortunate and regrettable burning of shacks resulting in injuries.
The MEC has resolved to assist these families by giving them blankets,
clothing and food parcels, so that they can be able to reorganise their lives
and cope with the tragedy that is facing them.
The families affected are that of Athaphia Mahura, of 521 Makhetha Street,
Mandela Square in Koffiefontein, a person with a disability and using a wheel
chair. He is critical and has been admitted to Pelonomi Hospital in
Bloemfontein.
The second family is that of Sonica Solani who is not so critical and
receiving treatment at the clinic for burn wounds. The Solani family is
residing at 1673 Sonwabile (Donkerhoek), Khayelitsha in Koffiefontein.
The MEC has decided to cancel her busy schedule and attend to the plight of
these families today, 31 July 2007 to donate the most needed items such as
blankets, food parcels and clothing. She will further assess the condition of
this family and comfort them during this difficult time.
The Department appeals to all individuals and families to take the necessary
precautions in handling fire, paraffin and boiling water as these can lead to
fatal injuries and loss of life. Adults must also ensure that they never leave
children alone as they are prone to experiment with life threatening substances
or even cause fire.
We trust that the citizens of the Free State will exercise caution and
preserve life.
