The North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard
Yawa, committed his department to assist the Maquassi Local Municipality to
organise a Youth Development Summit in a bid to address high rate of
unemployment among youth in Maquassi Hills. The summit will be organised in
partnership with the Provincial Youth Summit and Umsobomvu Youth Fund.
MEC Yawa revealed this at a community meeting attended by close to three
thousand youth from Tswelelang, Lebaleng, Kgakala, Witpoort, Boskeil and Lavine
at Kgakala Stadium near Leeudoringstad on Thursday. Yawa's meeting with the
community was aimed at explaining processes that will unfold after the
investigation into allegations of nepotism, irregularities in tender awarding
and extension of the term of contract for the municipal manager had been
completed.
Yawa reiterated that although the investigation has been finalised, the
report is yet to be presented to the Provincial Executive Committee on
Wednesday, 27 June 2007. "The report should be presented to the council of
Maquassi hills for implementation of recommendations before the end of this
month," he said. Meanwhile, the Southern District Municipality has allocated
R7,2 million to the Maquassi Local Municipality for roads, storm water and
street lighting.
