An opportunities portal, called Umsebenzi, has been developed and will be
used by the Department of Transport and Public Works to assist in the creation
of employment opportunities through the Expanded Public Works Programme by
collecting the relevant information from communities and registering unemployed
persons on an internet based system.
The portal will become a valuable tool for government, municipalities and
the private sector to extract information with regard to unemployed persons and
skills profiles in communities, towns, cities, districts, etc, as well as
assist in identifying the poverty pockets in the province. The portal is a key
tool that will give unemployed persons access and information to work
opportunities and more so, employers access to the skills base in their
