Western Cape Provincial Parliament moves to Beaufort West

22 August 2007

For the first time, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP) will have
a formal sitting in the Karoo town of Beaufort West on Friday 24 August 2007.
This is part of its Women's Month celebrations.

It will be only the third sitting of the provincial parliament outside of
Cape Town since 1994. The previous occasions were in George and Caledon. Many
other hearings and meetings of committees of parliament have taken place in
this town and across the province.

As part of its provincial Women's Parliament the WCPP will host an Imbizo
for women from all corners of the province tomorrow (23 August 2007) at 10h00
in the Karoo Recreational Hall (next to the Railway Station), where more than
300 delegates will discuss the role of women and (a) education, (b) the
environment and (c) access to land and property.

The evening will see a cultural programme and a traditional Karoo braai
function.

On Friday (24 August 2007) the members of the provincial parliament will
meet at 10h00 for an extraordinary sitting of the WCPP where gender issues will
be debated. Provincial ministers and MPPs will attend with women observing
proceedings. A declaration by the women with the recommendations from their
Imbizo will be read to parliament. At the end of the sitting, a delegation of
the Western Cape will be announced to attend a national Women's Parliament in
Cape Town next week.
