More than 700 people joined the Western Cape Provincial Parliament for the
third annual People's Assembly held from 09:00 - 14:00 in Atlantis.
The theme: All Shall Have Equal Rights.
The discussion points: Women's Participation in the Rural Economy, The
Impact of Legislation Dealing with Unlawful Discrimination against People with
Disabilities and The Rights of the Child: Child Labour with Specific Focus on
Children on Farms.
As partner of the People's Assembly, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament
had link-ups via satellite television with the national Parliament's gathering
in Oudtshoorn.
This is part of our Tenth Anniversary of the Constitution and in line with
the Constitution's aims to have people's voices heard on issues affecting them,
Speaker Shaun Byneveldt said.
The People's Assembly serves as a platform to review the progress or lack of
it regarding all legislation through direct interaction with communities.
Over lunchtime a band entertained the attendees with music and during the
afternoon Speaker Byneveldt dealt with questions and concerns of residents.
