Western Cape to discuss the development of football ahead of
2010

It is all systems go for the groundbreaking Football Summit of the Western
Cape to develop strategies for soccer growth for 2010 and beyond. This all
important gathering to be held in Cape Town on 29 July 2006 will see about 250
South Africa Football Association (SAFA) leaders from all the regions of the
Province putting their heads together in a daylong session discussing various
issues that will enhance the development of soccer in the Province. The Soccer
Summit will be preceded by a gala-dinner where the Premier will honour Messrs
Molefi Oliphant, Danny Jordan and Irvin Khoza for their role in bringing the
World Cup 2010 to South Africa.

MEC Jacobs says, “I have full confidence in the leadership of football that
has been invited to discuss strategies that would reaffirm the Western Cape as
a major player in 2010. The summit will therefore be seized with the
responsibility to develop a comprehensive football development plan for 2010
and beyond. The summit will also serve as a platform to launch the Western Cape
2010 campaign".

The expected outcomes of the conference are to:

* Agree on a common football development strategy with the focus on 2010 and
beyond
* Create awareness amongst the football fraternity, local government business
and all relevant sectors about the 2010 campaign.
* Discuss strategies and ways of building sound relationships with professional
teams of Cape Town and how to grow public support for these professional
teams.
* Discuss facilities and the best way of improving access to facilities.

The summit is part of the program of the Department in its efforts to play a
significant role in the development of sport especially football ahead of 2010.
Premier Rasool, MEC Jacobs and Speakers from SAFA nationally will share a
platform urging delegates to emerge with dynamic strategies that would put
football in the Province at a higher level.
