The department will tonight at the Lutheran Youth Centre in Athlone be
awarding provincial colours and kit to the 60 strong member team who will be
representing the Western Cape at the national Indigenous Games Festival to be
held in Mpumalanga from 31 August to 3 September 2006.
The Western Cape indigenous team was selected at the provincial festival
held on 10 June, in Kuilsriver where all the regions had sent their strongest
teams.
To prepare the team for the national games, a three day training camp was
organised in Swellendam to develop a sense of camaraderie and build team spirit
ahead of the intense three-day tournament.
The team will represent the province in all the agreed codes which are
iintonga, morabaraba, jukskei, diketo, ncuva, dibeke, kho-kho and kgati. It is
expected that the Western Cape will do well, following a steady growth of clubs
for the indigenous games. Last year our provincial team finished a respectable
third position behind Northern Province and KwaZulu-Natal at the national
festival in Oudtshoorn.
The team will leave for Mpumalanga tomorrow, 29 August 2006 at 7h45 from the
Cape Town Airport. Media is welcome to meet the team and take pictures.
The media is invited to attend for a photo opportunity at the capping
ceremony, the details are as follows:
