Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport to organise three
different celebrations for the Freedom Day

1. About 2 000 sport fanatics will descend on Bellville Teacher's College
sport grounds on the Freedom Day (27 April) to celebrate differently through
sport and recreation activities. This sporting event is organised as part of
Siyadlala Mass Participation, a government programme to mobilise communities to
do sports. On display will be a brand new sport called Skyball, which is based
on tennis and squash principles. Skyball enhances hand, eye and foot
co-ordination, which could be useful to any of the major ball sports like
soccer, rugby and cricket. Trainers will be on hand to run coaching clinics and
introduce the game spectators to the game giving them a taste of this new and
exciting game.

All members of the communities, young and old are invited to come and try
for this exciting product for themselves.

All news media are invited to come and witness the exhibition of the sport
that is set to take the country and the world by storm.

2. The Department will, in co-operation with Malibongwe Women's Development
Movement, celebrate Freedom Day at Athlone Civic Centre.

The programme will focus mainly on the commemoration of the 50th anniversary
of the women's march against pass laws. Speakers from national and provincial
governments will talk on the role of women in the struggle for liberation and
their challenges today. Activities will commence at 10h00 until 16h00.

3. The Department will jointly organise street soccer opposite the Good Hope
on 27 April as part of the launch of Homeless Soccer World Cup to be hosted in
Cape Town later in the year. There will be exhibition of street soccer and wide
range of arts and cultural activities including musical entertainment to
captivate the spectator’s throughout the day alongside the design for living
expo. The event will provide a great outing for families from all
communities.
