W Thusi on eThekwini regional Cluster awards ceremony

Statement of the MEC for Arts, Culture and Tourism, Mrs Weziwe
Thusi at the awards ceremony of the department's eThekwini regional
Cluster

The Artistic talents of KwaZulu-Natal need to be widely recognised and
artists should be afforded opportunities to make a professional living, says
the province's MEC for Arts, Culture and Tourism, Mrs Weziwe Thusi. Speaking in
Durban tonight (Wednesday) at an awards ceremony of the department's eThekwini
regional Cluster, she said she sought facilitation of opportunities. "Arts and
Culture offer increasing opportunities these days for previously marginalised
communities to use their talent for economic gain. Whether we are talking about
music, dance, painting and sculpture or the traditional indigenous craftwork
that is so rich in skill and beauty and so sought-after by peoples in other
parts of the world, there is an economic demand for these talents.

"I see it as the task of my department to facilitate a connection of supply
with demand, to assist in developing and fostering these talents and to
introduce individuals and groups to opportunity. This can mean providing
opportunities to perform facilitation of the recording of CDs, introducing
artists and craftworkers to new markets and constantly monitoring for and
identifying and promoting exceptional talent in all genres."
