On behalf of the Provincial Government and people of the Western Cape I
extend a warm welcome to all athletes of the Western Cape who participated with
distinction at the Commonwealth Games. The Western Cape Government is proud of
the significant contribution in the medals tally specifically by athletes from
this province.
I have made an effort during the past eight days to ensure that I did not
miss the television to get a glimpse of the highlights and really felt over the
moon to see Western Cape athletes rise to the occasion.
The fact that our athletes contributed more than 10 medals in the total of
38 proves beyond doubt that this province has abundance of sporting talent and
is a force to be reckoned with. I salute our medallists Babalwa Ndleleni,
Natalie Du Toit, Janice Josephs, Janus Roberts, Geraldine Pillay, Norlene
Conrad, David George, Ramsay Carelse to mention a few. The achievements of
these athletes will serve as an inspiration to our youth for many more years to
come.
With 2008 Olympic Games not very far off, I wish to appeal to the corporate
world to rally behind our teams and give the support they deserve so that
together we are able to field a fully prepared team, capable of bringing more
medals
