Town fans to support Vasco Da Gama
6 June 2006
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has again pledged 1 000 tickets
to enable Cape Town soccer fans to attend the crucial match between Vasco Da
Gama and Benoni Premier United when they clash at Bellville stadium on Sunday,
11 June 2006.
MEC Jacobs says âWe have watched Vasco Da Gama progress so impressively
during the last season and saw how they have thrashed their opponents recently
at the play-offs. They stand a very good chance of qualifying for PSL status. I
am appealing to all soccer fans in Cape Town in particular to come in their
numbers to motivate our boys to victory. The home ground advantage will only
work if all of us, would attend irrespective of our team loyalties. For the
sake of a better future for football in this province, I urge you all to come.
Since Vasco is the first team from Cape Town to play in this new format for
promotion to PSL, it is important that we all rally behind Vasco Da Gama"
Five hundred tickets will be distributed to schools that have a strong
support base for Vasco Da Gama while 500 tickets will be distributed free of
charge to Cape Town based radio stations on equitable basis. This is to ensure
that listeners and soccer fans in particular are able access tickets
freely.
This intervention is part of the Provincial Government's strategy to improve
the culture of support to professional teams based in Cape Town following
visible disappointing turnout at stadium. This poor attendance does not auger
well for the 2010 chances of the province.
