History will be recorded in the province tomorrow when the first Western
Cape Sport School opens its doors to the first intake for 2007. The Sport
School situated in the old Education College building in Kuils River will focus
on producing high sport performers following a screening process of prospective
pupils. The school has a total enrolment of 80 learners for Grade 8 and 9 who
were selected after meeting entry requirements of a good balance of academic
and sporting excellence.
The focus initially will be on the following sport codes: athletics,
netball, soccer, volleyball, swimming and gymnastics. The application process
was open and also sport federations had to submit or endorse applications from
promising athletes of the Western Cape. Besides normal syllabus and tuition for
grade 8, pupils at the Sport School will have added benefits.
The Western Cape Sport Academy (WESCA), a high performance unit attached to
the Department will provide sport science support including medical, dietary,
physiotherapy and biokinetics to ensure that learners are well cared for to
unleash their best talent. A total of six teaching staff has been seconded to
the school for a period of twelve months in anticipation of a formal
recruitment process.
MEC Jacobs will arrive at the school at 8 o' clock to ensure that it's all
systems go at this school, before he proceeds to other schools. The school will
admit grades 8 and 9 next year and outer years until there is enrolment for
grade 12.
