MEC Jacobs will on Wednesday, 25 January, announce comprehensive plans to
resuscitate ailing sport at schools across the province.
The new sport programme aimed at reviving Wednesday Leagues at schools as a
strategy to encourage competitive sport, reduce social ills and increase mass
participation is set to cost the Department several million rands per annum to
ensure sustainable development of sport and building communities.
The launch of this long awaited sport programme will coincide with the
hand-over of a multi-purpose court affording the school and the community an
opportunity to sharpen their talents in basketball, volleyball, tennis and
netball. Sinethemba Secondary is one six schools earmarked for facilities
provisioning before the end of this financial year as part of the overall
strategy to address the critical shortage of standard facilities at
schools.
In addition to formal speeches, there will be a variety of sport and
recreation activities planned for the day to give school clusters a taste of
the envisaged league programme for clusters.
