From 28 - 30 June 2006, Pretoria will become a hive of activity when
gymnasts from all over the country converge at the University of Pretoria for
the South African Gymnaestrada 2006.
âSeven of the nine provinces have concluded their programmes that qualified
them to participate nationally and are ready for this great day,â said the
national project coordinator, Ms Annetjie van der Walt.
This local event is seen as a stepping-stone to international participation
in the 13th World Gymnaestrada to be held in Dornbirn, Austria, in 2007.
According to Annatjie, Gymnaestrada 2006 gives gymnasts, coaches and
administrators an opportunity to hone their skills for this global event, while
having fun at the same time.
Gymnaestrada forms part of Sport and Recreation South Africaâs (SRSAâs) Mass
Participation Programme and the participants range from three years to 90 year
olds, including the disabled.
The event also enables the Multi-point Plan (MPP) to showcase some of the
indigenous games. Spectators and sport enthusiasts are encouraged to attend and
support the event.
