Sport and Recreation will feature on the agenda of the seventh session of
the United Kingdom-South Africa Bilateral Forum scheduled in London Wednesday,
23-24 May 2006.
Delegations to the Forum will be led by President Thabo Mbeki and the UK
Prime Minister, Tony Blair and issues for consideration include the
strengthening of partnership for faster and shared growth in South Africa,
support for the African agenda including implementation of the Group of Eight
(G8) Gleneagles Commitments, and co-operation between South Africa and the UK
in specific projects to promote peace and development in Africa. The delegation
will feature representatives from various government departments. The Forum is
entitled, âThe UK and South Africa: Building together on the 2005 Year of
Africa,â and will be co-chaired by newly appointed Foreign Secretary Margaret
Beckett.
A roundtable discussion on Africa, entitled âAfrica 2005: Putting Our
Promises into Practice,â will focus on achievement of the Millennium
Development Goals and ensuring implementation of the commitments made in the
report of the Commission for Africa and at Gleneagles in 2005. Discussions will
also include the operationalisation of the African Union, the implementation of
New Partnership for Africaâs Development (NEPAD) and the promotion of peace and
stability in Africa. In a recent visit to South Africa by an Adviser to the
Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Adolf Ogi, he made strong
recommendations to the departments: Sport and Recreation and Defence to
formulate and promote sport in peace keeping efforts.
The following South African government departments will be represented at
the Forum: Sport and Recreation South Africa, Foreign Affairs, Arts and
Culture, Defence, Education, Environmental Affairs and Tourism Science and
Technology, Home Affairs and Trade and Industry.
