Transport on road accidents during festive season

Pedestrian jaywalking claims many lives on South African
roads

About 985 road crashes have claimed 1 150 innocent lives since 1 December
2006, which is a slight decrease compared to 1 311 fatalities same period last
year. The number includes 453 pedestrians, 380 passengers as well as 317
drivers. The provincial breakdown is as follows:

* Gauteng 217
* KwaZulu-Natal 226
* Western Cape 116
* Eastern Cape 139
* Free State 103
* Mpumalanga 118
* North West 106
* Limpopo 86
* Northern Cape 39.

The main contributory factors to these crashes are:

* human factors
* pedestrians jaywalking
* fatigue
* speeding
* alcohol.

Vehicle factors:

* tyre burst
* faulty brakes
* overloading with passengers.
