Transport implements HOV3 on Ben Schoeman highway

Transport to reduce traffic congestion and promote public
transport

12 October 2007

The Department of Transport wishes to warn motorists that as from Monday to
Friday next week the emergency lane along the Ben Schoeman Highway will be
dedicated to public transport and vehicles with three occupants (HOV3). This
exercise will start during peak hours between 06h00 and 09h00 in the morning
and 16h00 and 18h00 in the afternoon between the Brakfontein interchange and St
Andrews off-ramp in Johannesburg.

The aim is to try and reduce traffic congestion and promote the use of
public transport and ride sharing by adding an additional lane to the current
road infrastructure by using the emergency lane as a dedicated lane.

The Department of Transport also warns that law enforcement officials will
be monitoring the usage of the dedicated lane and will be controlling traffic
along the on-ramps and off-ramps.

We would like to advise the users of the dedicated lane to exercise caution
when using the dedicated lane, more especially when approaching the on-ramps
and off-ramps.
