Pretoria: As we count the number of dead bodies on our roads, don't add
yourselves to the long list of those who thought it wouldn't happen to
them.
Since the start of the Easter weekend on Thursday, 13 April 2006, the number
of fatal crashes is 30 and fatalities are 54.
The breakdown of the fatalities is as follows:
* Gauteng: 3
* KwaZulu-Natal: 4
* Western Cape: 1
* Eastern Cape: 7
* Free State: 3
* Mpumalanga: 16
* North West: 5
* Limpopo: 9
* Northern Cape: 6
Not one of those died expected to be in an accident when they left home.
Accidents happen quickly, an extra second can mean the difference between
life and death. Some people drive recklessly so be extra careful.
'How fast do you drive to kill someone? Most people might say 130 km/h or
may be faster than 160km/h. In fact, hitting a human being at 40km/hr or more
is fatal. So be on the lookout for pedestrians as their actions on the road are
unpredictable. Hit another car at 100km/h and somebody will probably die. Of
course, injuries occur at even lower speed', warns the Department of
Transport's Arrive Alive Campaign.
