Notice of the Appointment of the Council
In terms of the provisions of National Small Business Amendment Act, No 26 of
2003, the Minister of Trade and Industry must, within a reasonable time,
facilitate a process aimed at the establishment of an Advisory Body, herein
called the Small Business Advisory Council, to represent and promote the
interests of Small Business as contemplated in the National Strategy for the
Development and Promotion of Small Business in South Africa.
Nominations
The Minister issued a notice in the newspapers with national circulation on the
basis of the abovementioned provisions for nomination of the candidates to
serve as members of the Council. After a thorough process of selection with
consideration of specific criteria, such as the youth, small business
practitioners, international experts, women, academia and the provincial
spread, the Minister approved the appointment of the new Council as
follows:

* Ms Yvonne Radinku
* Mr Edmund Thami Mazwai
* Professor Wolgang Thomas
* Professor Gessler Muxe Nkondo
* Professor Mangal Mahabir
* Ms Nhlanhla Gasa
* Ms Yvonne Finch
* Ms Tania Slabbert
* Ms Sibongile Sambo
* Dr Evelyn Rabaji
* Mr Harish Pal Kumar
* Mr Barboza Luiz-Carlos
* Ms Nandi Bam
* Ms Makole Elizabeth Letsoalo.
The aim of the body is to advise the Minister on:
* strategies to address identified market failures affecting the
sector
* the impact of current and new legislation on small business
* national standards pertaining to small business development and
regulation
* measures to ensure the creation of physical business infrastructure through
viable business sites
* the development of skills in all aspects of running a business
* steps to be taken to create access for small business into value chains
* constraints affecting the viability of the small business community
* methods to liase with the small business community to identify their
needs
* methods to monitor and influence the provision of support services to the
small business sector
* any matter that the Minister may deem appropriate.
