Trade and Industry to hold Southern African Development Expert Group
meeting, 6 Dec

The Southern African Development Expert Group meeting

4 December 2006

You are kindly invited to attend a press conference at the Southern African
Development Expert meeting that will facilitate regional integration.

Date: Wednesday, 6 December 2006
Time: 11h00 - 11h30
Venue: Gallagher Estate, Johannesburg

This sub-regional conference has been organised within the framework of the
Conference of African Ministers of Industry (CAMI), as a direct response to the
adoption by the African Union in July 2004 (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) of the
African Productive Capacity Initiative (APCI) as the sustainable industrial
component of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).

In the CAMI meetings the following priority industrial sub-sectors for
Southern Africa as areas of focus for the implementation of the APCI were
identified: Agro food processing, Fisheries, Forestry, Textiles and Garments,
Leather Products, Processing of Minerals and Metallic and Non-metallic
products, Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals, Machinery and Equipment and
Services.

The conference aims at facilitating regional integration, using the value
chain approach as a means of identifying a workable strategy to improve
industrial performance in Southern Africa.
