Trade and Industry (the dti) and National Development Agency (NDA)

Mr Lionel October, the Deputy Director-General of the Enterprise and
Industry Development division in the dti and Mr Godfrey Mokate, the Chief
Executive Officer of the NDA, signed a memorandum of agreement today to give
co-operatives greater financial and non-financial support.
The partnership between the dti and the NDA is a collaborative relationship
between the two parties to achieving developmental objectives by engaging in
sustainable co-operative strategies that support local economic development and
empowerment.
The NDA will facilitate governance and business plans for all co-operatives
requiring support and funding by:
* helping with the registration and training of co-operatives,
* providing project management to co-operatives
* providing capacity building for sustainability and knowledge
management,
* monitoring and evaluating the performance of the co-operatives to meet the
required standards.
The dti will support the NDA by capacitating its provincial offices in the
following;
* pre-incorporation education
* basic information
* registration of co-operatives.
Under the partnership the dti and NDA will collaborate for poverty
alleviation and economic development and to support the national effort to
revive sustainable co-operatives.
Co-operatives and collective ownership schemes are important vehicles to
meet the economic goals of development, broad individual empowerment, and
sustainable livelihoods for communities.
