MEC Mhlahlo to open road between Mthatha and Qokolweni

As part of celebrating 2007 October Transport Month, Eastern Cape MEC for
Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport, Thobile Mhlahlo, will officially open the
road between Mthatha and Qokolweni worth R139 million on Tuesday, 30 October
2007 at 9h00.

This road was previously gravel and has now been changed to a surfaced
all-weather road. Its construction included the building of two bridges across
the Ntlekisa and Mtebe rivers and one large culvert stream crossing.

During the construction process a total of 513 people were employed and
trained and 35 sub-contractors were used.

Parties who are benefiting from the implementation of this project can be
grouped into the following:

Urban area:
* the central business district (CBD) of Mthatha (Ward 31)
* southern suburbs of Mthatha (Wards 24, 27 and 28)

Rural area:
* villages accessed via district road DR 08292
* Emanxiweni, Orange Grove, Tyumbu, Kwenxura, Kunene Ntlekiseni, Mvunge,
Komkulu, Ngcwana
* taxi industry
* tourism
* entrepreneurs along the route
* institutions along the route (medical, education, etc)

MEC Mhlahlo is expected to further announce a number of projects that the
Department of Roads and Transport is planning to have in the Mthatha area,
including the building of a R16 million taxi rank and R6 million for road
maintenance in the City of Mthatha.

He will further give information about the latest developments with regard
to Kei Rail, Africa's Best 350 Ltd, and the new and second air service provider
that is expected to operate between Mthatha and Johannesburg.

At 17h00, MEC Mhlahlo will officially launch the expansion of the motor
vehicle license renewal to the Post Offices in the King Sabata Dalindyebo
Municipality in Madeira Street, Mqanduli, Mthatha, Unitra and Viedgesville.
