Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Transport yesterday awarded
certificates to learners participating in Mathematics, Science and English
project at Nelson Mandela Library in Qunu Village, Mthatha.
Wearing their respective school uniforms, project learners came in numbers
to witness their peers getting honoured for their hard work. Officials from the
Department of Education, Department of Roads and Transport, NGZ Consulting
Solutions, parents and teachers also graced the day with their presence despite
a nippy and drizzling weather at OR Tambo District.
The projects intended to gloom and grow engineers and professionals in
various transport fields and career was launched three years ago by Honourable
MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport, Thobile Mhlahlo in Nelson Mandela
Metropolitan District, were it was piloted with 100 learners. King Sabata
Dalindyebo and OR Tambo District Municipalities were also invited to take part
and the project started off in January 2006.
Addressing the house, Human Resource Development Manager, Ms Nomvuyo Bono,
who is also the initiator of this project, urged the teachers to commit
themselves in identifying learners with talent and potential in their schools.
To children, she said: "You came to life when opportunities are in abundance,
you must just grab them. Take care of yourselves and listen to your parents,
the world out there wants to destroy you, be careful".
Her words were echoed by Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Mr Denzil Skweyiya
during his keynote address. He said to learners: "You are in the mornings of
your lives whiles we as the elders are in our afternoons of our lives, you need
to use the opportunities presented before you and leave a legacy as a reference
to the next coming generation".
This ceremony, CFO explained, is a commitment demonstrated by the
department, students, parents, teachers and institutions of high learning in
quest to address the lack of critical skills needed to improve the quality of
service delivery in our country.
"With this project, the department is able to contribute to the production
of qualified engineers and professionals, for socio-economic development in
line with the Provincial Growth and Development Plan (PGDP)", Chief Financial
Officer said.
