Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport, Thobile Mhlahlo,
will lead a roadblock, which will be mounted on the N2 near Coega in Port
Elizabeth on Thursday, 13 December 2007 at 11h00.
This roadblock, which will include provincial and Nelson Mandela Metro
traffic officers, South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National
Defence Force (SANDF) and emergency medical and rescue services, forms part of
the Arrive Alive Campaign, which was launched by MEC Mhlahlo on 3 December 2007
at Wilsonia, East London.
These officers will be joined by 20 new young traffic officers, who
graduated from the Port Elizabeth Traffic College last week after receiving
bursaries from the Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Transport. They have
now increased our Provincial Traffic contingent to 501.
"We are strengthening our capacity to ensure the success of our Arrive Alive
Campaign. Next month, another group of young men and women will be trained and
be integrated into our Provincial Traffic Unit. This intake will further
enhance our capacity as we prepare for the 2010 Fifa World Cup traffic
volumes," said MEC Mhlahlo.
During the roadblock, MEC Mhlahlo will brief the media about the progress
that the Eastern Cape has made in the implementation of its Traffic Law
Enforcement Plan.
