Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport, Mr Thobile
Mhlahlo will launch TRANSMEC on Tuesday, 24 July 2007, at Osner Hotel in East
London at 10h00.
TRANSMEC is a political structure that will be chaired by MEC Mhlahlo and
give direction to transport infrastructure planning throughout the province,
working together with councillors, provincial and municipal officials.
The role of the structure is to enhance communication between provincial and
local government, as well as with communities regarding transport matters in
the province.
It will further ensure the devolution and delegation of transport functions
to the local level and accelerate service delivery.
The mandate of the structure derives from the:
* National Land Transport Transition Act, No 22 of 2000 (NLTTA)
* Provincial White Paper on Transport of 2001
* Provincial Land Transport Framework (PLTF)
The MEC is expected to make more important announcements with regard
to:
* road infrastructure development and job creation
* integrated transport planning for 2010 FIFA World Cup
* public transport transformation
* integrated traffic law enforcement
* service delivery improvement strategies at local government level
