Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison Roads and Transport Mr Thobile Mhlahlo
will launch the OR Tambo District Community Based Transportation Projects at
the Port Saint John's Sport Stadium on 31 May 2007 at 10h00.
These poverty alleviation projects are being implemented by the Department
of Roads and Transport in areas such as Port St Johns, Ngquza, King Sabata
Dalindyebo, Ntabankulu and Nyandeni.
They are ranging from Gabion basket manufacturing, rangers, road maintenance
projects and other transportation related projects.
Amongst the highlights of the day, there will be following:
* handing over of two passenger pontoon vessels (boats) to PSJ Municipality
to cross Umzimvubu River. This intervention is targeting the Noqekwana
community
* launch of five kilometres pedestrian and bicycle path (Non-Motorised
Transport) phase one at Port St Johns from Mpantu to First Beach, in an attempt
to realise the objectives of creating integrating rural mobility access
(IRMA)
* handing over 950 scholar bicycles to Port St Johns and the OR Tambo District
municipalities
* launch of community based community projects, including road maintenance and
ranger projects
* launch of Road Signs Project between Port St Johns and Port Edward
* signing of agreement between the Department of Roads and Transport and the
newly-established Africa's Best 350 LTD (a newly-established small bus
operators' company)
* handing over of two Graders to OR Tambo District for road maintenance.
