Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport Mr Thobile Mhlahlo
will launch infrastructure development projects at the Ukhahlamba and Alfred
Nzo Districts.
On Thursday, 22 March 2007, MEC Mhlahlo will launch the Sakha Isizwe
Community-Based Transportation Programme at Ngxaxha Village in Mount Fletcher
at 11h00. There are currently 1 995 poor households that benefited from this
programme throughout the province, of which 165 are from the Ukhahlamba
District. Another 500 household contractors would be employed as from April
2007. Their work entails maintenance of roads and fencing.
On Friday, 23 March 2007, MEC Mhlahlo will open a Junior Traffic Training
Centre at Ncapayi JSS in Mount Free at 09h00, followed by the opening of a
Vehicle Testing Station worth R10 million.
He will further turn the sod to mark the start of the paving project at the
Mount Frere's Main Street (N2), which will be done under the Department of
Roads and Transport's Community-Based Transportation Programme in an effort to
widen the road, which has claimed many lives of local people.
This project will cost the department R1 million and 40 local people have
been employed to start this labour-intensive project.
The controversy that delayed the construction of DR08015 (T15) has now been
resolved; as a result Phase 1 of the construction of this road will commence at
a cost of R346,9 million.
A construction company has been appointed and has now started with site
establishment in Mt Frere.
MEC Mhlahlo will further launch the Sakha Isizwe Community Based
Transportation Programme for the Alfred Nzo District, which has so far employed
161 households in the fencing project and 413 household contractors are
expected to start working in the new financial year.
He will officially hand over 150 bicycles, as part of the promotion of
non-motorised transport in the rural areas under the Shova-Kalula Bicycle
Project.
