Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport, Mr Thobile
Mhlahlo, will officially introduce 51 new traffic officers when he hosts
'Operation New Brooms' on the N2 near Truck Inn in Port Elizabeth on Friday, 13
July 2007 at 12h00.
These officers graduated two weeks ago from the Port Elizabeth Traffic
College after receiving bursaries from the Department of Roads and Transport.
They will now increase our Provincial Traffic Officers' contingent from 383 to
433 and will be deployed as follows:
Graaf-Reinet (2), Aberdeen (5), Grahamstown (3), Cradock (5), Engcobo (5),
Sterkspruit (5), Maclear (5), Aliwal North (5), Maluti (5), Bizana (5), Port St
Johns (5).
We are strengthening our capacity to ensure the success of our Arrive Alive
Campaign, which is a continuous and tactical programme that runs throughout the
year.
This year, the Arrive Alive Plan provides an integrated enforcement plan
that responds to the demands of prevailing circumstances in an effective
way.
The focal areas are:
* driver fitness with emphasis on their documentation
* fatigue & alcohol abuse
* moving violations including illegal use of cellphones while driving
* passenger and freight transport
* vehicle fitness and registration plate enforcement
* pedestrian safety.
This intake will further enhance our capacity as we prepare for the 2010
FIFA World Cup traffic volumes.
MEC Mhlahlo is expected to announce the department's plans to introduce a
new 24 hour shift system for traffic officers.
