indaba
20 February 2007
In response to the President's clarion call for an extensive mobilisation of
communities against crime, Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and
Transport Mr Thobile Mhlahlo will host a Community Police Forum Indaba at the
Christian Centre in East London on 27 and 28 February 2007.
This Indaba, which is taking place during the Safety and Security Month, is
expected to be attended by 700 CPF members from across the province and a
variety of stakeholders including government departments, business,
non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other civil society bodies.
The purpose of the Indaba is to reposition the CPFs in order to respond
promptly to the new social crime prevention strategies, especially now that we
are preparing for 2010 FIFA World Cup. The theme of the indaba is "Fighting
Crime Together for Peace."
The main issues to be discussed include:
* the strengthening of the CPFs
* CPF as a vehicle to improve South African Police Service (SAPS) service
delivery
* integration of programmes in line with the newly-launched provincial crime
prevention strategy
* role of youth in crime prevention
* role of local government in crime prevention as we prepare for 2010 FIFA
World Cup
* strengthening the Criminal Justice System departments
* Safer Schools Programme (as highlighted by the Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo
Balindlela in her State of the Province Address).
Members of the media are cordially invited to attend these activities.
