Thobile Mhlahlo, to hand over graders, bicycles and wheelchairs to Ukhahlamba
District
24 October 2007
As part of the Transport Month programme, Eastern Cape MEC for Safety,
Liaison, Roads and Transport, Mr Thobile Mhlahlo, will officially hand over two
graders, 80 bicycles and 10 wheelchairs to the Ukhahlamba District on Thursday,
25 October 2007, in Aliwal North at 10h00.
The two graders form part of the six graders that have been purchased by the
Department of Roads and Transport this year at a cost of R16,4 million as part
of a Substantial Recapitalisation of the Yellow Fleet (road maintenance
fleet).
Each of the six districts in the province had received two graders as a start
in order to deal with the impassable roads.
"Aliwal North is one of the gateway towns in the province that have been
earmarked for tourism development, especially during 2010 Federation
International Football Association (Fifa) World, as it links Eastern Cape and
Free State. As government, we have a responsibility to invest in its
infrastructure in order to achieve our objective," says MEC Mhlahlo.
The 80 bicycles form part of the Shova Lula Bicycle Project, where more than
800 bicycles were distributed to each district to assist learners who travel
long distances to reach schools and the Department has spent more than R5
million this year.
As part of improving the mobility of people with disabilities, especially
those who are victims of road accidents, the Department has purchased 10
wheelchairs for the Ukhahlamba District, which will be handed out by MEC
Mhlahlo.
The department has further sponsored tracksuits and training shoes to
Maletswai Gymnastrada who represented the country in the international
competition in Austria. These Gymnastrada will be awarded certificates as
well.
In this event, MEC Mhlahlo is further expected to hand over certificates to
23 of the 399 Sakha Isizwe Community-Based Transportation Programme Household
Contractors, who have finished training.
